Sand Play On the Go: A Portable Sandbox for Kids

What’s a portable sandbox? Our guest blogger Sarah of How Wee Learn explains!

I love having my little ones in the veggie garden with me.

Except for when I don’t love having them in the veggie garden with me.

When I am getting the garden ready I don’t mind one little bit moving ten times slower, having holes poked every which way and seeds planted in lovely zig zags instead of straight lines.

But after that – out, out, out!

Those little feet trample those tiny sprouts, and curious shovels can’t help but unknowingly dig up those seeds.

I need to keep those little ones out until the seeds begin to sprout – and then I once again welcome those little gardeners of mine back into our veggie patch.

But here’s the thing. During the “out, out, out!” phase of the veggie garden, the weeds flourish. So I need to get in there to weed and water. Of course my little helpers want to be in there as well, but – well, you know, “out, out, out!”

This year we crafted a little something that worked like a charm! A portable sandbox from a Melissa & Doug Kids’ Cart. I parked that puppy right beside the garden so I can happily weed and water while my little ones happily dig, trample, and run a muck beside the garden.

It could not have been easier to make. I simple added sand to the cart. That’s it! Since I knew I would be using it next to the garden, and I know my little ones love to do as I do, I added in some little gardening trowels and cultivators and a watering can.

I also found a very engaging Seaside Sidekicks Sand Cupcake Set that I knew my boys would adore. And they do. They have spent hours baking mudpies, muffins, and cupcakes.

The boys experimented with pouring water to get just the right consistency for muffins and cupcakes, though of course eventually they ended up with muffin soup.

When we were done our work in the garden we would pop everything into the netted bag that came with the cupcake set, pop it in the sandbox, and wheel it to a sheltered spot.

One might put this portable sandbox in a garage or a shed or a barn if one had such a thing. But we are the farmers without a barn, garage, or shed (which is a long story – and temporary – hopefully temporary…) so we just popped it in a sheltered(ish) corner beside the house.

This portable sandbox is perfect for wheeling all around the yard.

If you need to keep a little one busy while you are barbecuing, just roll it on over.

Looking to do a little fence painting? Roll that sandbox right on up.

Needing to keep a little sibling busy at a soccer or baseball game? Why not cover it with a garbage bag and roll that sandbox right into the trunk!

Plus covering it will help it stay dry and free of unwanted animal visitors — you know, even if yours is in a garage and not a sheltered(ish) corner beside your house. (Temporarily. Hopefully temporarily.)

I hope this idea gives your garden a little bit of time to grow friends, thank you for reading!
