The Scoop

This wooden play food set is perfect for young chefs looking to explore a little mealtime fun--without the mess! It includes eight pieces of wooden food that can be sliced into 25 sections, a cutting board, and a wooden knife. Cutting the food makes a satisfying "crunch"--and provides a playful introduction to concepts of "whole," "part," and fractions.

My three year old received this as a Christmas present. He loves it. We order "real" pizza once a week and Roman loves to make his own version with this toy. It is well made and carefully crafted. I have nothing bad to say!

Comments about Melissa & Doug Cutting Food - Wooden Play Food:

My son is 2 1/2 and has developmental delays. I wasn't sure if he would be able to use this right away, but it looked so cute I bought it for Christmas. It is the best toy out of many he received this year. He loves to pretend to slice the veggies, fruits and bread, just like mommy. He needs some help to reassemble the pieces and line up the knife, but loves the satisfying crunch as the velcro gives way. When all the pieces are cut up, we put them in pots to make soup. This is a fun activity in the kitchen when I'm busy cooking and my son is busy dumping pieces in and out and stirring away at his pretend meal. Love this toy!

Comments about Melissa & Doug Cutting Food - Wooden Play Food:

My son absolutely loves that he can cut food just like mommy. It was great to help his motor skills develop as he held the knife in just the right spot to cut and then reassembled the pieces. He loved to cut and "cook" the pieces in his pretend kitchen. I just wish that the velcro would last a little longer because sometimes he just picks up a whole fruit and the pieces come off. Also, had it not been on sale for 50% off at AC Moore, I would not have purchased it because I felt it was too pricey at its regular price.

My daughter who is three and my 17 month old son equally love this toy! My husband and I bought this for our daughter for her birthday this year because she loves play food. She loves putting the food pieces together and then carefully cutting them apart. My son loves to chew on them and we learn about colors and shapes as he plays with them! I love that these are so well made and realistic! I can't wait to purchase more Melissa and Doug wooden food sets!!

                • Have kids identify each food and categorize it as a fruit, vegetable, or grain.

                • Place the food items in a row and ask kids to count the number of food items. Repeat the activity until the child is able to count them independently.

                • Have kids place the apple on the cutting board and cut it apart with the wooden knife. Explain that the apple has been cut into two equally sized pieces, or halves. Ask kids to find another piece of food that could be cut in half (the pepper).

                • Have kids put together the sandwich-bread slices on the cutting board and to use the wooden knife to cut them into individual slices. Explain that the bread was cut into three equal slices, or thirds. (Do not use the loaf for this activity--it works best with the sandwich slices.)

                • Have kids place the watermelon slice on the cutting board and to cut it apart with the wooden knife. Explain that the watermelon slice has been cut into four pieces, or fourths.
