The Scoop

The pegs on the bench go up and down, playing peekaboo on this solid wood pounding activity. Non-removable pegs take turns showing their smiles while your toddler has fun naming the colors and practicing fine motor skills. A sturdy mallet is included.

Comments about Melissa & Doug Deluxe Pounding Bench Toddler Toy:

I gave this to my granddaughter for her first birthday and watched her open it (with help) via FaceTime, online. She immediately grabbed the hammer and after sucking it for a minute, banged the pegs. Amazing! It's her new favorite toy.

We love that the pegs are non-removable, so they don't get lost. Even the older siblings like to play with this.

Comments about Melissa & Doug Deluxe Pounding Bench Toddler Toy:

We were excited about this toy as the pegs don't come out so we wouldn't lose them, and the levers push one up when you pound the other. But within a couple days, the pegs are loose and just fall back and forth, defeating the purpose of the toy.

Comments about Melissa & Doug Deluxe Pounding Bench Toddler Toy:

My 11 month old loves this toy (as well as his 6 yr old sister). I like how the pegs do not fall out as the traditional bench works. This allows younger children to play without the frustration of pegs coming loose. It is also fantastic for clean-up time since there are no loose pegs to find when playtime is over. I can already see my son thinking about the cause and effect of him hammering one of the pegs. He will go back and forth with the opposite peg as they take turns going up and down. It is great to see him study the effect as he hammers the pegs. This is very durable.

Comments about Melissa & Doug Deluxe Pounding Bench Toddler Toy:

This is similar to a toy I played with as a youngster in the 40's. While I don't remember exactly what it looked like, I remember that whenever you pounded something into the box (I think it had five sides- including the top) something else would come out. I've always thought of it as a metaphor for life: just when you think you've got something fixed, something else goes wrong. This could just be a product of my imagination, but I'm pretty sure that there actually was such a toy. Any thoughts??????

In the meantime, my 18 month old grandson loves the Deluxe Pounding Bench: it deals with colors, and hand-eye coordination in holding the hammer, and hitting the pegs with the end of the hammer instead of the side. I don't think he thinks about the philosophical aspect, however.

          • Review all the peg colors with kids. Repeat the activity until they are familiar with the colors. Have kids pound one peg at a time as you identify the pegs by color.

          • Count pegs with kids. Repeat the activity until they have mastered counting to eight. Ask them to pound down a certain number of pegs as you count those pegs aloud.

          • Demonstrate how a peg goes up when the opposite peg goes down. Allow kids to experiment with this, then askthem to predict which peg will go up when another goes down. As the kids' understanding of this process grows, ask them which peg to pound in order to raise a specific peg.
