    The Scoop

Rock the pelican from foot to foot and see baby's early-learning skills take a big step forward! With crinkly patterned wings, a big squeaky beak, a wiggly fish in his belly, and a mirror on his back, this funny fellow offers lots of incentive to touch, feel, lift, turn, and exercise early motor skills. Children can rest the pelican on either foot, balance him on the edges of both, or just have fun grasping and turning the clicking cup feet. The child-safe mirror on the reverse has a hard, flat surface that gives babies and toddlers a clear view and stands up to all a pelican's daily adventures! Melissa & Doug K's Kids toys nurture early childhood development in three key skill areas: physical, cognitive, and social. With interactive designs and multisensory features, K's Kids promotes constructive play and effortless learning, keeping interest high and new skills flourishing throughout the baby and toddler years!

    • 6 MONTHS AND UP: Holding one wing in each hand, show how to "walk" the pelican from foot to foot. Encourage the child to hold the pelican's wings.

    • Show the child his or her reflection in the mirror. As the child begins to recognize the reflection as his or her own, encourage facial expressions such as opening the mouth or blowing raspberries.

    • Identify different parts of the toy, such as the feet, belly, head, eyes, and cheeks. Point to these parts of the child's body, too.

    • 9 MONTHS AND UP: Place the toy on a low tabletop or chair to encourage cruising or walking.

    • Talk to the child about the different colors on the toy. Say a color name aloud as you point to that color on the toy. Then guide the child's hand to touch the color. Repeat the activity to describe the different shapes and textures in the same way.

    • Count the different parts of the toy, such as the points on the crest or the dots on the wings. Say each number aloud as you go.

    • 12 MONTHS AND UP: Place the pelican on one of its feet, and ask the child to help it balance on the other foot.

    • Name a color, pattern, or texture, and ask the child to point to all the parts that fit the group.

    • Narrate a story starring the pelican. Ask specific questions to help the child fill in the details. For instance, "The pelican feels very hungry. What does he want to eat for lunch?"
