The Scoop

Young pizza chefs will shout "Mamma mia!" when they see the 54 toppings that come with this wooden pizza set! Then they'll get busy topping, cutting, and serving up six custom slices for their happy customers. The set comes with a brightly colored tray, pizza cutter, spatula, and a wooden box for storage, and the pizza makes "slicing" noises when cut!

Comments about Melissa & Doug Pizza Party - Wooden Play Food:

My daughter loves these wooden food sets (we have the birthday cake and pizza). However, they used to be made with a sliding plexi glass cover for storage - they no longer come with any cover - and it irks my type A personality ;) Great toy - but needs a tidy solution for storage and organization. I have received these as gifts - but wouldn't personally purchase these food sets for this reason.

Comments about Melissa & Doug Pizza Party - Wooden Play Food:

This was "handed down" to us from an older cousin, but it has been a great gift. It was & still is in perfect condition despite hours of use. Our daughter (3 1/2 yo) started pretending it was a birthday cake which prompted us to buy the 3-layer birthday cake (which she also loves). When she had lost a little interest in the pizza we watched an online video. She had renewed interest & was imitating the additional ways to play with it. I hadn't thought of it as being a puzzle & learning tool (just play food). Sure enough, she loves the sorting, counting, & creating the circle. However, she does disassemble & assemble the 3-layer cake more. I think because there is a bigger puzzle to solve.
On her own she has pretended the toppings are money. She also uses them to "make salads" in a bowl. The pizza has also been "baked" in her play oven & under every piece of furniture.
The storage box is nice & sturdy, but I wish it had a lid to keep in pieces & make stacking/storing easier. Simple plates to suit the chunky pizza (&cake) slices would be great (to buy separately).
If we hadn't been given this, I think I would have completely overlooked all of the wooden cutting play food. Now she's getting even more for Christmas. Well worth anyone's investment to be passed down to siblings & future generations.

Comments about Melissa & Doug Pizza Party - Wooden Play Food:

        (Overview)
My mother gave the Pizza Party to my daughter after learning she enjoys helping us make real pizza. We don't always have time to make pizza from scratch, so this is a nice toy to pull out when my daughter feels it's "Baking time!".

        (Pros)
This toy is great for cooperative play as well as helps build language and counting skills. I have seen 3 children play in complete harmony when they are hosting a Pizza Party.

We have never had a problem with the storage box. We use it to store the play dishes and the play knives.

Our relatives who live in Assisted Living enjoy the Pizza too. They have limited dexterity and have commented that this was one of the few toys they could enjoy with the kids because they *can* grip the utensils and *can* pick up the pizza and toppings.

        (Con)
I would like to see a wider variety of toppings. Maybe offer booster packs featuring an "All veggie" or "Meat lovers" option? My daughter wants chicken to be available as a topping.

Comments about Melissa & Doug Pizza Party - Wooden Play Food:

I got this for my grandchildren and was amazed at how much enjoyment they get from it. I've noticed my grandson, who has autism and has problems eating, has recently been showing "imagination" in his play and he seems to loves this pizza! He even took one of the pieces to bed with him and "pretended" to eat. I'll definitely be purchasing other play food items and hopefully it will help my grandson develop an interest in food. His sister loves preparing meals for all of us!

            Discover More Ways to Play
            • COUNT IT OUT With kids, count the number of pizza slices. Repeat until they are able to count them independently.

            • TOPPING TYPES Have kids sort the toppings into groups by type. Have them identify each type of food and count how many there are in each group. Count how many toppings there are all together.

            • SAME SLICE Play a matching game by filling a slice of pizza with three toppings and asking kids to match your slice.

            • DIVIDE & CONQUER Put all six slices of pizza on the pizza pan to introduce the word "whole." Demonstrate "half" by slicing through the middle of the pizza. Put the pizza together again, then demonstrate "thirds" by slicing the pizza into three equal sections.

            • ORDER UP Ask kids to make you a slice of pizza to order. Specify which toppings you'd like, and ask the child to cut one or more pieces for you to "eat."
