Wooden Project Workbench

By Kat McGib

Comments about Melissa & Doug Wooden Project Workbench:

The workbench has been a wonderful addition to our 4 year olds playthings. However, three of the small round hubs have been misplaced. Which makes building the models in the booklet impossible. I would purchase an additional construction kit if one contained the small hubs.

Comments about Melissa & Doug Wooden Project Workbench:

We bought this for our rough and tough nephew that loves to be like his daddy. My husband and I put this together in about half an hour with our two year old crawling all over us and the work bench. It is very sturdy and instructions made it easy to assemble. It came with a lot of pieces to play with. My two year old daughter loved playing with it as we put it together. The wood isn't real cheap and smooth so no splinters. My only complaint is the vice as it is a little difficult to operate but still works.

Comments about Melissa & Doug Wooden Project Workbench:

Melissa and Doug put out great products and we always check with them first before getting toys. We only buy toys that we believe will make it through our children and still be around for their children. I don't want it to sound like we are bashing this workbench because it is awesome and the kids love it. It's just that they would love it even more if the vice was a functioning vice. It looks like it might have been crossthreaded so it wouldn't go in or out and eventually the handle broke from them trying to make it work. Things happen, no big deal. In all fairness I have not contacted the company yet and I'm sure they will make it right. One lesson I did learn? Why not wait until February to put it together, that way they get Christmas like excitement twice! haha BTW we forgot about it being in the back of our Suburban coming back from Grandma's. It was a breeze to put together if you just take your time and follow directions.

It is great to see the delight in your child's face as the project is complete.
However only one project can be constructed at one time so each project that is made has to be taken apart. Wish you can buy extra pieces as I would purchase more.

          Fantastic toy... but boy focused.

Comments about Melissa & Doug Wooden Project Workbench:

I am absolutely impressed by this toy. It is well designed, well manufactured, was easy to put together. It is fun. My daughter enjoyed putting together the workbench and making the robot together today. The only reason I've given it four stars is a lack of girl-friendliness. The picture of the boy on the front lead her to ask "Is this just for boys?". Also, the projects aren't girl-friendly. Should M+D make a girl-friendly add-on available, whether it be a kit or just a project book, we'd buy it in a pinch. One other small suggestion: We wish it was compatible with the toolkit, which we also bought for our littler one expecting them to be compatible. It's not a far stretch... the parts are almost identical - It's just the bolt sizes and threading that are slightly different. These are small things - We will get much fun, and enrichment from this toy. We spent around $70CDN for this toy, and I feel I got good value for our money. Already, I can see my daughter's tactile and mechanical skills developing. And she loves it.

Comments about Melissa & Doug Wooden Project Workbench:

My 6 yr old son got this for Christmas, LOVED putting it together (with parental help), took off flying with the booklet of models to make with the wooden pieces, bolts, screws, etc., and quickly began making designs of his own. His twin sister and our neighbors' children all love playing with this, too. The boys have been making everything in the project book, and some unidentified objects as well. The girls have loved this , too, but have wished that there were also project designs to make baby crib, stroller, high chair kinds of things . I'm not sure the designers anticipated this sort of interest from the girls, but it really is a big hit with mine and my neighbors'.
I encountered one problem; the wooden screw on the front-mounted vice grip splintered out and broke from the repeated torque. The company cheerfully replaced the whole section quickly and at no cost. I did suggest a redesign of that particular screw of a more durable material able to stand up to the repeated twisting and pressure.I also suggested that they begin to offer supplemental design books and sets of extra building pieces.
All things considered, I love this, would give it as a gift or buy is all over again.

                • Encourage kids to set up a racecourse with a starting line, finish line, and obstacles. Then, have fun racing the cars! Optional: Have kids draw a driving course on extra-large construction paper or make one on the floor with blocks or masking tape.
