My kids are still at the age where they love school. They aren’t fans of waking up early or doing homework when they could be playing outside but they still enjoy going back to school. Although we love our summer holidays I know they’re excited about returning to school, mainly to see their friends.
Finding out who is in their class, which teacher they have this year, and what everyone has been up to over the summer break makes the start of the school fun and exciting. It’s one of the few times I don’t have to drag my kids out of bed on a school day.
A perfect way to build excitement for the start of school and reconnecting with friends is to make bracelets for old friends, new friends and classroom teachers. Of course the obvious choice is to bring out the beads. My youngest loves stringing the wooden beads on, customizing her patterns and making each bracelet unique. We used the same Melissa & Doug bead sets that helped us create DIY Meditation Chains (also a perfect idea once school starts).
When you’re done with the beads, Blog Ambassador Valerie from Inner Child Fun has a great idea for reusing the wooden bed trays.
DIY friendship bracelets can be a great craft to allow for your child’s creativity, something to keep them occupied as they anticipate the start of school. Even if your child is anxious about school, nervous about what to expect or sad because they won’t know anyone, working on this craft together can create an opportunity to sit and talk through fears and worries. The distraction of the craft might make it easier for some children to open up.
Simple faux leather wristbands and mess-free glitter bracelets are perfect for even the smallest scholar, and offer a perfect way to break the ice at school and make new friends. I have to say as a mom who isn’t a big crafter I love the Melissa & Doug Mess-Free Glitter products; we even used them when making our DIY Autograph books.

Heading back to school can be both exciting and overwhelming for kids. Celebrate the fun aspect of seeing old friends and creating news ones by working on a few back to school friendship bracelet crafts. It’s a perfect time to share stories about friends, what to look forward to, and talk about worries, too.
Wishing everyone, kids and parents alike, a wonderful start to the new school year.
