This time of year is always a great time to get outside and explore the garden with your children. It is full of flowers, planting and digging in the dirt. Not only are these things fun and exciting for kids, they are also wonderful for supporting a healthy sensory system. Today I am excited to share the amazing sensory benefits of gardening with kids.

The garden has endless opportunities for  hands-on experiences to foster learning and encourage children to process their world through touching, feeling, comparing, and observing. From the messy yucky mud to the refreshing water, it can be a place full of excitement and sensory explorations.

Ways to Encourage Tactile Input:

  • Feeling and rubbing a variety of plant parts
  • Seed sorting
  • Planting seeds to encourage fine motor development
  • Writing in the dirt with their fingers
