Details Countless Ways To Play

The Scoop

Keep playtime rolling along with this wooden set that includes a city bus, bus stop, and 12 play figures (decorated on both sides), ready to get to work! The bus driver can carry up to three passengers (each 2 in/60 mm tall) at a time in the approximately five-inch wheeled bus. There's a covered bus stop, and lots of opportunity for kids two and older to discover different occupations, as well as develop counting, sorting, and problem-solving skills. This set, crafted of solid wood, encourages storytelling and creative, imaginative play. It also plays perfectly with the Melissa & Doug Jumbo Activity Rug!

Discover Countless Ways To Play
  • Have the child identify all of the play figures and what their jobs might be within the community. (For instance, maybe the woman wearing purple works at the library, a gift shop, or at town hall; the man in shorts could be a delivery person, a security guard, or maybe a bicycle police officer.) Do the figures remind the child of any people in his or her own community?

  • Have the child count the wheels on the bus, as well as other details, such as the windows and the number of stripes on the front grill. Have him or her count play figures as they are placed on the bus. When the seats are filled, ask the child to count the figures that are not on the bus. Talk about which number is greater, the play figures on the bus or the ones off the bus.

  • Have the child identify the colors on the bus, the bus stop, and all of the figures.

  • Have the child sort the play figures into groups based on details you give. For example, you might ask him or her to find the figures that have black pants, the ones wearing hats, the ones that have buttons, or the ones with short hair.

  • On a flat surface, use string, yarn, blocks, or chalk (if surface is erasable) to create a streetscape the bus can navigate! Encourage the child to tell a story using the play set. Have him or her name the bus driver and passengers, and talk about where they are going and why. What does the bus pass on its route? What do the passengers do or talk about while they are on the bus?
