9 MONTHS AND UP: Arrange all the blocks in a row and count them aloud. Guide the child's hand to point to each block with you as you count it.
With the blocks on their sides, place each shape piece partway through the matching sea-animal hole. Encourage the child to push the shapes all the way through.
12 MONTHS AND UP: Help the child identify the colors of the blocks and shape pieces.
Say a color name aloud and guide the child to point to all the pieces of that color.
Help the child place the shape pieces in the white shape-sorting lid.
Stack the blocks to make a tower, then ask the child to knock the tower down. Help the child build a new tower.
18 MONTHS AND UP: Create a tower of blocks. Ask the child to place the shape pieces into the correct sorting holes.
Help the child nest the blocks one inside the other.
Narrate a story starring a family of people as you point to the faces on the blocks. Ask the child to help fill in the details by asking specific questions. For instance, "Here is the big brother. Should he go to the zoo or the store?"
