Sustainability Snapshot: Our Commitment to a More Playful Planet

May 24, 2022

At Melissa & Doug, we’re on a journey to make the world a better place and nurture healthy imaginations, and that’s why we’re committed to nurturing our environment.

Increasingly, parents and caregivers seek out sustainable products and services, and we do too, because many of us are parents.  We’ve created our sustainability initiatives around three meaningful pillars: Thriving Forests, Timeless Toys, and Inclusive World.

5 Ways Melissa & Doug Brings Sustainability to Life

Here’s how we’re making our sustainability goals a reality:

1. We’re Doing Good When it Comes to Wood

We made a pledge to ensure that by 2025 more than half of our wood products sold would be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC). To accelerate that timeline, we are already producing our top-selling wood products in 2022 as FSC®-certified.

2. We’re Making Forest Friendly Paper Products

We also pledged to have 100 percent of our paper products to be FSC®-certified by 2025, and to make good on that we’ve already purchased 100% of the responsibly sourced raw materials needed for our 2022 production.

3. We’re Planting 10 Million Trees by 2030

Without trees, kids don’t have access to thriving forests and high-quality wooden toys. That’s why reforestation efforts are so important to our operations: Trees are a natural, renewable resource that also happens to be critical to the health of our planet. Children still enjoy climbing trees, building fairy gardens around them, and putting swings on them, making trees an essential element to kids’ outdoor play. We’re proud of our promise to plant 10 million trees by 2030. Melissa & Doug has teamed up with One Tree Planted, a non-profit organization dedicated to global reforestation, to help us reach our goal. You can read about a recent replanting project we supported in the Peruvian Amazon that had been hit hard by logging.

4. We’re 100% Carbon Neutral

We’re carbon neutral in our own operations, with our purchases of carbon offsets going toward forest management projects.

5. We’re Sharing How to Recycle Our Packaging

Melissa & Doug joined the Sustainable Packaging Coalition and How2Recycle, a standardized recycling labeling system which we plan to begin rolling out on packaging by the end of this year.

At Melissa & Doug, we don’t expect that our journey to make the world a better place will ever truly end. The drive toward sustainability is a foundational part of our company’s DNA, and we’ll continue to find ways to make better, smarter, more sustainable choices in everything we do. We’ll update you periodically on the latest strides we’re making. Thank you for your support.
